Dental Implant Placement: What You Need to Know

Understanding Dental Implants

Dental implants are titanium alloy screws that are placed below the gums to replace missing teeth.

Cranberry Oral Surgery performs the treatment below the gums, while your general dentist restores the tooth above the gums, including the final crown.

The Dental Implant Process

1. Extraction and Bone Graft Healing Phase

About four months after your procedure, you will return for a 3D CBCT scan so we can determine the amount and quality of bone available for implant placement.

If enough bone is present, we will begin planning your implant surgery. If the graft needs more time to heal or if additional bone is needed, we will review and adjust the plan at that visit. When sufficient bone is confirmed, the dental implant will be placed. In some cases, additional bone grafting may be needed along the outer wall or in the sinus area.

2. Implant Placement

After the implant is placed, it typically requires about four months to heal and fuse (integrate) with the bone. Once it has integrated, we will test it to confirm it is strong and stable.

3. Implant Healing and Final Restoration

When the implant is stable, your general dentist will make your custom crown and place the final restoration. This completes your implant treatment. :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}

Why a Dental Implant Is Often the Best Replacement Option

Implant-supported crowns and bridges function and feel like natural teeth. They are often easier to maintain than a bridge or removable partial denture, and unlike a traditional bridge, implants do not require grinding down healthy neighboring teeth.

Treatment Time

Typical treatment time ranges from 4 to 12 months, depending on your individual healing and treatment needs.

Extraction and Bone Grafting

The bone around a tooth provides the foundation needed for future implant placement. When a tooth is removed, bone grafting is often recommended at the time of extraction to help preserve this foundation.

Cranberry Oral Surgery may use any of the following grafting materials for your procedure:

  • Allograft – bone from a human donor
  • Autogenous graft – bone from your own body
  • Xenograft – bone from an animal source

A bone graft significantly improves your chances of having enough healthy bone for a successful implant in the future.
