Sinus Lift

Understanding Sinus Lift Procedures for Dental Implants

Purpose of a Sinus Lift

A sinus lift may be recommended when there is not enough bone height in the upper jaw to support dental implants. During the procedure, the sinus membrane is gently lifted and bone graft material is placed beneath it to create enough bone for implant placement.

Healing and Recovery

Both direct and indirect sinus lift techniques generally require a healing period of about six months.

For delayed implant placement, the grafted bone integrates (fuses) with your natural bone to form a strong foundation for a future implant. For same-day implant placement, the grafted bone heals and bonds around the implant, creating stability.

Choosing the Right Approach

The choice between a direct or indirect sinus lift depends on several factors:

  • The amount of bone currently available
  • The location of the planned implant
  • Your sinus anatomy and overall health

A 3D CBCT scan will be performed so Dr. Kirkpatrick can evaluate your sinus anatomy and determine the most appropriate approach for your individual needs.

Direct Sinus Lift

A direct sinus lift is typically used when there is very limited bone height beneath the sinus.

  • The sinus membrane is carefully lifted through a small opening in the bone.
  • Bone graft material is placed directly beneath the sinus membrane to increase bone height.
  • Depending on bone quality, an implant may be placed at the same time or after healing.
  • If the implant cannot be placed the same day, healing time is usually about six months before implant placement.

Indirect Sinus Lift

An indirect sinus lift is a less invasive technique used when there is slightly more existing bone.

  • The bone graft material is placed through the same opening made for the implant.
  • This gently raises the sinus floor to improve vertical bone height.
  • Healing typically takes about six months to allow the grafted bone to heal with the implant.

Graft Materials

Grafts used in sinus lift procedures may include:

  • Allograft bone – from a human donor
  • Autogenous bone – from your own body
  • Xenograft bone – from an animal source
  • Synthetic bone – a lab-made bone substitute

These materials help create a stable foundation for a future or same-day dental implant.
